In a bid to foster collective commitment in the fight against cancer, the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria APHPN, Rivers State chapter, has called for collaboration among healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers and communities.

APHPN expressed the belief that the collaboration would enable health care givers develop personalized approaches to cancer care.

The state APHPN Chairman, Dr. Aloni Alali, revealed this in a statement by the assistant secretary, Dr. Siene Oluwatosin Orogun, who doubles as the PRO.

Alali stated this while commemorating the annual World Cancer Day, which is held every February 4.

The theme for the 2025 World Cancer Day is ‘United by Unique’. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the individual experiences of those affected by cancer while fostering a collective commitment to fight against the disease.

The APHPN chairman explained that the disease remained one of the leading global health challenges, affecting millions of individuals and families worldwide.

According to him, cancer is a complex group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.

He stressed that understanding the causes and risk factors associated with cancer was crucial for effective prevention and control strategies.

Speaking on the causes and risk factors, he said, “cancer can arise from a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

“Genetic mutations, whether inherited or acquired, play a significant role in the development of various cancers. Environmental factors, such as exposure to carcinogens (substances that promote cancer), include tobacco smoke, radiation, and certain chemicals.

“Lifestyle choices, such as diet, physical activity, and alcohol consumption, are also critical risk factors. For instance, obesity has been linked to several types of cancer, including breast, colon, and endometrial cancers.

“In addition to these factors, infectious agents, such as certain viruses and bacteria, can contribute to cancer risk. For example, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer, while Hepatitis B and C viruses can increase the risk of liver cancer.”

On the control and prevention of cancer, Alali said that “preventing cancer requires a multifaceted approach that includes: public health initiatives, education, and individual lifestyle changes.

“Regular screenings and vaccinations, such as the HPV vaccine, can significantly reduce the incidence of specific cancers. Public awareness campaigns can help educate communities about the importance of early detection and healthy lifestyle choices.”

World Cancer Day, serves as a global platform for raising awareness about cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.
