2 min readWorried by news of the death of two people from Ediba, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State as a result of Lassa fever outbreak, the member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Alex Egbona, has sought the intervention of the federal government to check further spread of the infection.
The lawmaker has equally appreciated the quick action taken by the Cross River State ministry of health to contain the situation.
On Wednesday, the commissioner for health, Dr Egbe Ayuk had led a rapid response team to Ediba immediately the news broke, to ensure mitigation processes and terminate possible spread of the infection.
In a letter to the minister of health on Thursday, Egbona drew the attention of the federal government to the unfortunate outbreak and appealed for urgent intervention to support the state government’s efforts.
He said in an interview with TNN that he was glad that the state government moved into the area immediately the outbreak was reported, but noted that there was need for the government to give some support.
He urged the people of his constituency to adhere to all preventive measures in order to stay healthy and noted his readiness to galvanise supports from all corners to contain the situation.
Egbona, who is also the House committee chairman on specialty healthcare, said the health of his people was paramount for him, hence his relentless attraction of health related projects and programmes to the Abi/Yakurr federal constituency.
He sympathised with the Ediba people on the loss of the two brothers and urged the bereaved family to take heart and remain strong in the face of the unfortunate loss.
