2 min readThe people Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency of Cross River State are very close to having a federal medical centre, following the passage of the bill for its establishment in Itigidi on Wednesday.
Sponsored by Dr Alex Egbona, the member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, the bill will be expected to be receive concurrence passage at the senate, before its endorsement by the president.
People of this constituency have not had a tertiary hospital and had to rely on health centres over the years. The closest to them are either the ones in Calabar or Abakiliki, headquarters of Ebonyi State.
In sponsoring the bill, Egbona had argued that there was the need for his people to enjoy quality medical care at a tertiary level. Egbona, currently the chairman of the House committee on specialty healthcare, has attracted many projects in the health sector to his constituency, including the reconstruction and equipping of health centres in all part of the federal constituency.
Only recently, he also attracted solar powered energy projects to the health centres to assist the personnel in the discharge of medicare to the people.
Speaking after the bill was passed, Egbona expressed gratitude to the leadership of the House and his colleagues for supporting the bill and noted that once the bill is signed into law, his people would experience fresh air in the area of quality health care.
He said the current federal government under President Bola Tinubu was serious with the task of offering quality healthcare for Nigerians and expressed the hope that once all the legislative processes are completed, the president would give his assent.
According to him, “the Federal Medical Centre, Itigidi, when established, will be a crucial addition to our healthcare infrastructure, providing essential services that will save lives and improve the well-being of our people.
“This medical facility is so dear to my heart and I had to initiate the legislative processes by way of a bill so that my people can enjoy good health care as promised by the Tinubu government under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“My people will soon stop going to Abakiliki or Calabar for tertiary health care. Very soon, we will have one in Itigidi and people from neighbouring Ebonyi communities will be coming to us for medicare. It will also serve those in neighbouring local governments.
“I am particularly happy with the speaker and members of the House of Reps for supporting this bill from the very beginning. This is why my people elected me to represent them and on my honour, I promise to do even more for them.”
He said more initiatives that would make life more meaningful for the Abi/Yakurr people were underway and urged the people to continue to pray for and support him.
