“Let your work speak for itself: If poor, it will remain silent. If average, it will whisper. If good, it will talk. If great, it will shout. If genius, it will sing,” so entreated Matshona Dhliwayo. In the words of an anonymous source, “Sometimes you don’t need to speak, your work will speak. Let’s reflect on letting your work speak about you.

Do you know that the true value of your work is demonstrated by its tangible outcomes? Do you unconsciously recognize the importance of quality work and reliable results over self-promotion or boasting? Can you declare as Corrine Brown: “I will let the work I’ve done speak for me”? As often said, actions speak louder than words. In Ralph Emspeak’s words, “What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” The Biblical wise man understood the value of diligence and so declared, “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before unknown men” (Proverbs 22:29). Producing excellent work requires believing in excellence, passion in attention to details, valuing quality over quantity, commitment to longterm reward over immediate gratification, devotion to legacies and positive impacts, and the likes. The implication is that pursuit of value can hardly be found among the ordinary, average or “common men.” It’s not related to position but devotion and so one can occupy a big position but fail in excellence despite the resources at one’s disposal.
So, enhance your capacity for quality work. Let the quality of your work be your signature. Let what you’re involved in have the mark of excellence and let that consistently reflect your identity. In a world of self-praise, praise singers and propagandists, let your work praise you – not your mouth or your hired agents. Pinterest put it this way: “Talent…let your work speak for itself, just keep being dope.” Henry Kaiser added, “When your work speaks for itself, don’t interrupt.” Know that when you see your work as your identity and are devoted to making who you are a reflection of your commitment to excellence, you won’t need to invest much in singing your praises. As Pinterest counselled, “Work in silence and let your success speak for you.” Let your work reflect your professional devotion, ethical convictions, personal identity, and lifelong goals. Are you holding a position in public trust? Reject the temptation to let immediate praise blind your eyes to long-term legacies. Let your work tell your story and be your adverts. Are you a workman, put in your best in what you do even if it requires a little “extra.” Let people see your work and seek for you.
As you step out, reject the temptation to pursue immediate gain at the expense of lasting impressions. Be committed to letting anything that passes through your hand be a reflection of your taste for excellence. As Ledisi counselled, “Let your work speak for you. Stay humble. And just DO the work.”
