There is a plot by people suspected to be agents of the Cross River State government to cause a security breach around my family compounds and use same to frame me up, intimidate and possibly compromise my security and those of the people around me, a member of the House of Representatives from Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, Dr Alex Egbona has alleged.
Egbona said in a statement on Monday, that he had to raise the alarm following information at his disposal concerning a plan by some people to attack his residence in Calabar and his Ekureku-Abi LGA country home, as was the case during election seasons in 2015 and 2019 respectively.
In 2015, he recalled, security men at his Calabar home were attacked by unknown armed men who later fled after firing shots at the guards. This, he said, happened when he was contesting an election under the umbrella of an opposition political party.
A similar thing happened in 2019 at his Ekureku village, when a serving commissioner, at the time, led some men who were dressed in military uniform to his home under the guise of searching for guns.
“The armed men in military uniform invaded my country home on election day, turned all rooms upside down, including my bedroom, and were telling me that they got information that there were guns in my house.
“When they finished searching everywhere and found nothing, they walked away, after psychologically traumatizing me and members of my household. As I went out, I saw that the female commissioner who led them to my compound was hiding inside a government labelled hilux car, from where she was communicating with them.
“So, when I heard that there is a plot to invade my home and plant some incriminating stuff in either or two of my homes in Cross River, I recalled what I had gone through in 2015 and 2019 and decided to raise this alarm.
“I am drawing the attention of security agents in the state to this threat. I am equally drawing the attention of the state governor, Apostle Bassey Edet Otu, to this issue, because he is the chief security officer of our state. I deserve to be protected by him and our law enforcement agents.”
Egbona said a formal report was being sent to the various security agencies to put them on notice, to prevent a repeat of the 2015 and 2019 experiences. He added: “The wellbeing and safety of everybody in my household is very important.
“Nobody deserves to be attacked because of election. I do not see why election should be seen as war. We can go about the 2027 election without hurting even a fly. We should allow our works to speak for us at the various polling units, instead of planning to attack opponents because of election.
“If anything happens to me or any member of my family, the public should hold the government of the day in my state responsible.”
