Nigerian households are breathing a sigh of relief as the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, crashes by nearly 39% from record highs.
Prices have dropped from a peak of over ₦2,000 per kilogram in June, 2026 down to a more manageable range of ₦1,100 to ₦1,500 per kilogram across major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Bayelsa and others.
In Bayelsa State, for instance, Yenagoa in particular, the essential product sells between N1,200 and N1,300 at major filling outlets while petty retailers sell it for between N1,500 and N1,600.
Meanwhile, various factors such as market drivers and policy shifts are responsible for the current relief which are as follow:
Local Supply Boost: Improved domestic production and availability have flooded local depots with the product.
Export Restrictions: Government directives instructing producers to prioritize the domestic market over exports helped stabilize local inventory.
Tax Rebates: The recent removal of import duties and Value-Added Tax (VAT) on cooking gas imports under the government’s growth initiatives lowered wholesale depot costs.
Impact On Families And Small Businesses: The sudden crash in energy costs offers vital breathing room for everyday citizens who faced severe financial strain when the price of LPG was at its peak.
Many families in Yenagoa and other parts of Bayelsa State had previously abandoned clean cooking gas entirely and forced to rely on hazardous alternatives like charcoal and firewood.
With the current retail refills in many areas, household budgets are seeing immediate relief.
Mrs. Edoka Onoriode told our correspondent that her family has returned to gas for cooking following the reduction in the price of the commodity.
She appealed to the federal government to create room for more competitiveness among retailers to drive prices down further.
If current production levels and supply chain stability hold steady, experts project even greater affordability for consumers in the months ahead.
