Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has directed the police to expedite investigation and prosecution over the killing of a 24 year old youth, Patrick Peresuodei.
Peresuodei, an indigene of Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, died after an alleged assault linked to an online disagreement with Bodmas Kemepadei, an incident that has continued to attract public condemnation.
The governor gave the directive while speaking at the 181st State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday at Government House, Yenagoa.
Diri said the state government intervened immediately after the incident was reported, stressing that murder cases were matters between the state and the perpetrators.
According to him, following briefings from relevant officials, he directed the attorney-general and commissioner for justice to take over the case on behalf of the state to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.
While condemning the killing, the governor appealed to residents of Amassoma community and youths across the state to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to aid investigations.
He assured that all those found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law.
Diri also condoled with the families of victims of the road accident that occurred last Friday while they were travelling to attend the burial of the late Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
He described the victims as patriotic Bayelsans and assured their families of government support, noting that their service and sacrifice to the state would not be forgotten.
The governor further commended the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community for their cooperation and peaceful conduct throughout the burial ceremonies.
In his words, Patrick Peresuodei’s death was a case of murder that required diligent and speedy investigation, adding that justice must be served to deter similar acts.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Ewhrudjakpo family and the Ofoni community, led by Dr Oyowvin Osusu, later visited the governor to express appreciation to the state government for its support during the burial of their son.
