Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder have arrested eight suspects and seized a large quantity of suspected illegally refined diesel during an anti- crude oil theft operation in the Niger Delta.

The operation targeted identified bunkering routes in Degema and Obologo, area known as the major place for illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta . Naval authorities said the raid was base on intelligence and aimed at disrupting organised networks behind crude oil theft.

According to the Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Mutalib Ibikunle Raji, who spoke through the Acting Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander Justin Jerome, said the operative team encountered a suspicious boat during patrol

The vessel was reportedly being escorted by armed individuals who fled upon sighting naval operatives, abandoning both the boat and its cargo. A search of the vessel led to the discovery of 423 sacks of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), estimated at about 44,000 litres.

Authorities described the seizure as a significant blow to illegal refining operations and the black market fuel supply chain in the region.

The operation was conducted under Operation Delta Sentinel, part of ongoing efforts by the Navy to curb crude oil theft and safeguard Nigeria’s maritime resources.

The eight suspects and recovered products have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

EFCC officials said those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
