Impeachment Threats Worry Bayelsa Deputy Governor

John ODHE, Yenagoa
Threats of impeachment against Local Government Area chairmen by councillors of different legislative assemblies in Bayelsa State have become a cause for concern to the Deputy Governor of the state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The deputy governor expressed the concern in a meeting with chairmen and leaders of the eight local government legislative assemblies in Yenagoa.
Ewhrudjakpo, who frowned at incessant impeachment threats against the chairmen of councils said such would only cause distractions and retard grassroots development.
He emphasized that taking such actions without following due process would heat up the polity, urging the councillors to always explore all avenues for dialogue with leaders of the various legislative assemblies and avoid confrontational approaches.
The deputy governor also advised leaders and councillors to ditch selfishness and innovate ideas that would move the councils forward.
It could be recalled that councillors of Ekeremor legislative assembly recently raised a motion for the impeachment of the council chairman, Dr. Betula Perekeme, citing financial malfeasance and high-handedness.
The same act was also replicated in Sagbama local government area where councillors threatened to impeach the council chairman, Mr. Alale Embeleakpo.
It would also be recalled that the media was recently awash with rumour of alleged plot by the Bayelsa state House of Assembly to impeach the state governor, Senator Douye Diri.
The state assembly, through the chairman, House Committee on Information, Tare Porri, however, debunked the allegation, stressing that there was no element of truth in the rumour.
