Guber Poll Rift: Supreme Court Keeps Diri, Sylva In Suspense

2 min read

A former minister and governorship candidate of the APC during the 2023 election in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, as well as the state governor, Senator Douye Diri are to wait a little more, for their fate to be determined by the Supreme Court.

On Monday, the apex court heard the appeal filed by Sylva against the election of Diri in which he had pleaded that he be pronounced winner of the November 11 election, even though INEC had declared Diri the winner and the declaration affirmed by the tribunal and the court of appeal.

The apex court listened to arguments by both parties on Monday before informing them to go home and wait for their verdict.

Through his counsel, Chris Uche, sSAN, Diri had told the Supreme Court to follow the same path the tribunal and the court of appeal followed and trhow away Sylva’s appeal for want of merit.

He said Sylva had no case and before the court, being that his case was in a terrible state and beyond redemption. Both the tribunal and the court of appeal had queried Sylva and the APC for presenting fake results and asking that same be used to declare him winner of the election.

INEC’s counsel, Charles Edoshomwan, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, represented by Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, were in unison in their clamour for a dismissal of Sylva’s appeal.

But a very hopeful Sylva, represented by Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, urged the apex court to set aside the judgments of the tribunal and the court of appeal and declare him winner.
