Flood Wreaks Havoc In Rivers Community

Edith CHUKU

Sunday’s torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc in some communities in Eneka clan of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State following the devastating flood situation in those areas.

Natives and residents of Rumuowha community in Eneka are begging the state and local government to speedily intervene to salvage the situation.

On Monday, when our correspondent visited some of the flood impacted areas, the residents expressed their inability to vacate their apartments over lack of money, adding that they had no alternative.

Mr. Oliver Nnamdi, a father of three children; a boy and two girls, took TNN to his compound, showed his sitting room, bedroom, kitchen and backyard which were completely submerged.

He explained that, “this year makes me three years in this place. I experienced this thing last year, I thought that it’s a joke, I didn’t know that the thing will become something that will come this year.

“Even last year own came early, around ending of August I travelled, before I came back armed robbers scattered my house, stole my AC, loot everything, even my other neighbour; they cut his protector, entered the house and packed his things, despite that we said let’s continue, I didn’t know it will come again.

“This year again after August and September, we were happy that the flood will not come again, we didn’t know that the flood will come again and even worse.”

When asked why he had not relocated with his family, considering the danger, Oliver said, “where will I go, where will I run to? I don’t have money to rent a house that’s why I raised my bed with blocks so that we will have a place to sleep.

“With the situation of the country now, no money, no job, I don’t have any other alternative but to raise my bed and my chairs because I don’t know where to go.”

In his appeal to the government, the Rumuowha resident said, “I beg them in the name of God, let them know what to do to rescue people. Inside this place people are suffering, some people water has gotten to their chest, with the situation of things now, no money.

“We are begging the state government, indigenes of Eneka to come to our rescue. Thank God you witnessed with your two eyes, we don’t have anywhere to stay. In the night, all of us will manage this bed and without light and mosquito curl we can’t sleep, the mosquito here is very terrible, we don’t have any place to go to that’s why we are managing here.

Eleven year old only son of Oliver who gave his name as Destiny Nnamdi expressed fear over the flood situation in their house.

Speaking with TNN, Destiny whose feet were affected by the dirty flood water noted that, ” I don’t fell good because of how the thing is doing us. How I wish my daddy has money he would have rent house for us to stay.

” I want them to help us on this flood situation.”
