In no distant time, the Ekureku, Abi Local Government, Cross River State campus of the Nigerian Institute of Leather And Science Technology will witness a serious expansion and the posting of a lot more staff, says Dr Alex Egbona, the House of Representatives member who attracted the monotechnic to the state.

Egbona said in an interview that he was in touch with the institute’s headquarters in Kaduna and remained hopeful that many more infrastructure and personnel would get to the training centre very soon.

Saying that he was excited that after a long wait, academic activities had resumed in the centre, the lawmaker noted the zeal to learn on the part of the pioneer students and urged parents to consider sending their children and wards there.

He said: “I am getting updates on what is happening at the Cross River campus of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology which God used me to attract to my federal constituency and I must say that I am happy that steady progress is being there.

“I am talking with the relevant persons in government. I am in touch with the headquarters of the institute in Kaduna. I can assure our people that very soon, the federal government will do more for the institute.”

Last week, shoes made at the institute were shown to members of the public, even as Egbona said he had granted scholarship to the pioneer students and was hopeful that other public spirited individuals would sponsor the less privileged who cannot afford to attend a university or polytechnic, to go there to acquire skills.

According to him, “this institute is one place where our people can learn how they can use their hands to do leather works, including shoes, bags, belts, wrist watches and all the things that can be produced with leather.

“The fees are not high. The admission conditions are not difficult to meet. As long as you have a secondary school certificate and you are determined to learn, you will be admitted. If we have many people go there learn, in the next two to five years, we will have hundreds of our people that would make money good money producing leather works.”
