The United Correspondents Chapel (UCC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State council says arrangements are underway to sensitize secondary school students on the dangers of drug abuse, cultism and cyber crimes.
The UCC disclosed this during a courtesy call on a sister organisation, the People’s 93.1 FM, a Yenagoa based radio station.
Chairman of the chapel, Mr. Ekaunkumo Amgbare, said the visit was to partner other media organisations to drastically reduce the growing menace of drug addiction, occultic activities and cyber crimes amongst young Nigerians.
Amgbare hinted that some secondary schools had been selected for the planned sensitization exercise with the theme: “Menace of Drug Abuse, Cultism, Cybercrime and the Future of Bayelsa Students.”
The UCC chairman, who was flanked by his vice, Mr. John Odhe and other members, thanked the General Manager and management of the people’s FM for their warm reception.
“We wholeheartedly appreciate you for graciously receiving us on this courtesy visit today, 11th June 2026, especially as the request was made only three days ago. This prompt response reflects the high regard you have for the press and for partnership that advances public good.
“Our mandate is to promote professionalism, ethical journalism, and unity among media practitioners, while partnering with stakeholders to advance truth, development, and accountability in our society.
“We are here today to formally introduce the new executive members of the chapel to your esteemed station, strengthen our existing relationship and explore areas of collaboration in public enlightenment programmes that will benefit Bayelsa people.
“We are also here to seek your support in publicizing our forthcoming sensitization programme for selected secondary schools in Yenagoa,” Amgbare added.
Responding, the people’s FM’s general manager, Mrs. Adetokunbo Adeeko, described the visit as apt, promising collaboration with the UCC to fight societal ills.
“We are one. We are supposed to project, enlighten, educate, inform and entertain the public and we are not to ferment trouble or instigate what is wrong.
“We are not supposed to temper with the peace and unity of Nigeria. We should be far away from those things. So, it’s a good thing that you have brought up this topic at this time that these menace are everywhere,” she said.
The GM promised to partner with the UCC during the proposed programme by helping to air the activities.
