In recent times, tongues have been quivering following the influx of persons living with mental disability to the streets of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
Piqued by the ugly situation, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State council, recently issued a statement, calling on the State government to take necessary action on the ugly situation.
It is based on the foregoing that the Bayelsa State council of the NUJ has commended the Bayelsa State government for commencing a headcount of persons living with mental illness in Yenagoa the metropolis.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, the NUJ described the move as a proactive step in the right direction and a demonstration that the government is listening to the voice of the people.
The council recalled that the issue of persons with mental illness roaming the streets of Yenagoa was raised during its recent congress on June 25, 2026 and captured in the communique issued thereafter.
NUJ Bayelsa therefore lauded the State governor, Senator Douye Diri, for directing the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development to act promptly on the matter.
The council noted that the exercise will not only help to sanitize the environment but also provide care, treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable persons.
The pen professionals further assured the State government of the union’s continued partnership and support in advancing policies that promote public health, safety, welfare of citizens and good governance generally.
Council also reiterated Journalists’ commitment to playing their statutory role as watchdog of society through objective reportage and constructive engagement.
