3 min read

A former presidential aide, Obol Okoi Obono-Obla has underscored the reasons for his decision to massively mobilise for the return of Dr Alex Egbona to the House of Representatives to speak for the Abi/Yakurr people of Cross River State.

He said on Monday that the federal constituency cannot afford to send someone who lacked the knowledge of the workings of the executive and the legislature.

Obla, a lawyer and founding member of the APC known to be an ally of the president. Muhammad Buhari said Egbona’s educational qualification, experience in the two arms of the government and his down to earth posture qualified him as the best to remain in the position.

He said: “some of us think legislative work is just about talking on the floor of the parliament or contributing to motions initiated by colleagues in the parliament.

No, it is strenuous and intellectual work. It requires the legislator to research a lot on so many things involving issues that are of his legislative engagement. “In the Abi-Yakurr Federal constituency, we cannot afford to send someone who is half-baked.

We have to send someone who is well honed and experienced, someone who is experienced in the workings of both the executive and legislature,
someone who is a second termer.

“Hon. Alex Egbona is our best bet.
We must return him to the House to consolidate the gains of his first time.”

Meanwhile, work on phase one of the Ekureku Civic Centre project attracted to the community by the member, House of Representatives, Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, Dr Alex Egbona is now underway.

The civic centre is being constructed to provide an events spot for people of the constituency. It will also have some recreational facilities and also accommodate traditional rulers from the area.

Phase one of the project has to do with fencing and building of the security house. Work on this phase has already reached an advanced stage.

While inspecting on-going work at the project site, Egbona said his dream was to have a similar project in other parts of the federal constituency. “This is phase one of the civic centre project. Once we are done with this, phase two will commence. Approval was given in the budget for it to be executed in phases.

“My plan is to replicate this in other parts of the constituency. This is to enable our people have a decent place for recreation and to also host their events. There is provision in the construction plan for a mega hall that people can do their weddings and other social events.

“Those who like indoor sporting events will also find this civic centre very useful. People will always go there to unwind and socialise. There will be something for our traditional rulers there. The youths will have something there. Everyone will have reasons to always visit the civic centre.”

He thanked the Akarefor people for allowing the workers a peaceful atmosphere to execute the project, saying that other parts of the federal constituency will equally enjoy a similar project in the months ahead, once it is captured in the budget.
