As part of efforts to improve safety and security in the area, the Wokoma Youth Security Team in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, have arrested two suspected thieves.
One cooking pot, electrical wires and some other valuables alleged to have been stolen were recovered from the suspects who were arrested in the early hours of Monday.
They were apprehended during a routine security patrol, even as the group assured that further investigation would be carried out by appropriate security authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The community security team have reportedly arrested several individuals in recent months over alleged criminal activities within the community.
Monday’s incident raised concerns about youth involvement in criminal activities, even as the local security team urged young people to shun drug abuse and engage in productive ventures.
They also urged youths of the community to acquire useful skills and contribute positively to society rather than engage in activities that undermine peace and development.
A resident who gave his name simply as Mr. Achinike expressed concern over the increasing activities of criminals in the area while commending the vigilance of the local security team.
He acknowledged the economic hardship facing many Nigerians but stressed that it should not be used to justify criminal acts.
Achinike revealed that, “these boys are really disturbing us here seriously. You even hang your clothes outside, in the morning you might not see it when you wake up.
“I agree that there is hunger, people are suffering but it is affecting all of us. You are collecting from someone that might even be suffering more than you.
“Hunger is not an excuse. Now see what they stole; a woman’s cooking pot that she might be using for business to fees her family. This is terrible.”
Further, he said, “I want to thank the security team for all their efforts. Risking their life to protect our own and property. God will continue to protect them for us.
“I agree that every community should have their own local security because police cannot do it all. If something happen here now before police will come. So communities should have their own security.”
Community leaders and residents have urged young people to pursue legitimate means of livelihood, acquire vocational skills, and contribute positively to the growth and development of the community.
