National President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Isaiah Benjamin, has issued a call to action for journalists covering the 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the “Gateway Games 2024”, in Abeokuta. Benjamin emphasized the importance of professionalism and accuracy in reporting, urging journalists to avoid spreading unsubstantiated reports.
Addressing journalists at the media centre in Abeokuta’s June 12 Cultural Centre, Benjamin praised the Ogun State government for the spectacular opening ceremony, which was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu. He noted that this strong start could set the tone for a successful festival.

While acknowledging that there might be areas for improvement, Benjamin encouraged journalists to build on the momentum of the opening ceremony. “We are here to report the Gateway Games 2024, and everything may not be perfect, but the opening ceremony was a good start,” he said.
Benjamin stressed the importance of fact-checking and clarity in reporting. If journalists encounter unclear issues, they should ask questions, and the media committee would provide answers. He reminded them of the journalistic principle to omit information if they’re in doubt.
Journalists were assured of their freedom to report as long as their stories are factual and don’t portray the event in a bad light. Benjamin also emphasized the need for good behavior, proper dressing, and prioritizing safety during the festival.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria president disclosed that the association would hold its convention during the sports competition to assess the event and issue a communique. This would provide an opportunity to evaluate the festival and offer feedback.
Benjamin also mentioned that the association would address complaints about accreditation and transportation, working with the relevant authorities to ensure journalists can perform their duties smoothly.
The Chairman of the Media Committee of the Local Organising Committee, Kunle Solaja, pledged to provide all necessary support to journalists covering the event. He assured them that the committee would do its best to facilitate their work.
Solaja’s commitment echoed Benjamin’s call for professionalism and support. By working together, the media committee and journalists can ensure a successful and well-reported festival.
The Gateway Games 2024 promises to be an exciting sporting event, with athletes from across the country participating. With the right approach to reporting, journalists can help showcase the talent and sportsmanship on display.
By prioritizing accuracy, safety, and professionalism, journalists can contribute to the success of the festival and provide readers with engaging and informative stories.
The festival’s outcome will likely be influenced by the collaborative efforts of the organizers, athletes, and journalists involved. With a strong start, there’s potential for the Gateway Games 2024 to be a memorable event in Nigerian sports history.
