Repeated warning against dumping of wastes on the median in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State appears to have been hitting deaf ears, as some residents have continued to violate the order, even though a few others have heeded the warning.
While traders, motorists and those residing around Rumuokoro, Rumuigbo, Rumuokwuta and the Aba road axis of the state have refrained from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, others around Iwofe – St. John’s area have refused to adhere to the order, aimed at restoring the state from garbage city to its garden city status.
TNN, in a tour in some areas in the local government, observed that people were still dumping refuse on the median around Big Tree Market, A.A Rano Filling Station, Chicken Republic, all along the Iwofe-St. John’s area of the state.
A motorist, Mr. Emmanuel Effiong faulted the Big Tree Market as reason for the continual dump of refuse on the maiden in those areas. According to him, “Port Harcourt is clean now, if it was before, dustbin will line up from School gate till flyover, everywhere will be smelling, but now it is different.
“This one is because of the market, and I am not sure it is the market people, I think na people wey dey buy from market dey dump the dustbin here. Let that thing they put in Rumuokoro flyover warning people not to put dustbin in this middle of road be put everywhere, that is the solution.”
A trader in the said market, who introduced herself as Mrs. Gladys Ibukem said, “Nooo, no be market, no be from market, if you check well, that thing na for night them drop am, eh fit be people wey dey waka, or person fit come from house drop them, but lie lie, no be market people do am.”

Also, one Mr. Vincent Okereke, who owns a cement shop explained that, “It is necessary they stop people that are dumping those things there before it will get out of hand, and anyone they catch should be the scape goat, they should use that person to set example for others. The solution is for people to get their dustbin and dump their waste there, not on the road, the smell before was terrible, you can’t breathe well, now it is better, we have to continue like that so we will stay healthy.”
TNN, through calls and text messages, made efforts to reach the team leading the campaign against dumping of refuse on maiden with the numbers displayed on the campaign banner at Rumuokoro flyover, but till the time of this report, neither the calls nor message were returned.
