Youths of the oil rich Niger Delta region, under the aegis of South-South Youths Initiative, SSYI, has called for the immediate sack of the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio on issues they said concern the generality of Niger Deltans.
The Pan-Niger Delta youth group made this call in a release made available to TNN by her national president, Imeabe Saviour Oscar, where they stated that Akpabio’s actions might plunge the region into crisis they believe can cripple the nation’s economy.
In the release titled “Sen. Akpabio’s unabated selective approach to Niger Delta issues must stop,” the leadership of the group described Akpabio as the worst minister Niger Delta Affairs have had since it was established.

SSYI also affirmed her preparedness for another showdown at the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, at the end of this November. Recall that about two months ago, SSYI had shut down activities at the NDDC, on a one week protest against the continued delay in the inauguration of the board.
According to Imeabe, “The leadership of South-South Youths Initiative, SSYI, expresses regrets over the selective approach often adopted by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, on issues that concern the generality of Niger Deltans. This act may plunge the region into crisis that in turn would affect the economic life of the nation.
“The desire of the people of the region has remained that their communities be developed in line with the mandate given the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. Anything short of this remains unacceptable.
“On good authority, the leadership of South-South Youths Initiative has it that Sen. Akpabio organized a meeting with few individuals, who he claimed represent the people and youths of Niger Delta, in which undisclosed issues were discussed. We believed that that meeting and the persons invited to attend do not represent the interest of the good people of the region as issues they may have discussed are only and remain personal to them.
“We believe that if anything that concerns the region was to be discussed that invitation ought to have been extended to different youths groups representing diverse interests in the region. This is one of the reasons we have maintained that one of the major problem we are facing in the region as at today is the Niger Delta Affairs Minister who has failed to understand that he is serving the interest of Niger Delta and not his interest.”
The SSYI national president condemned the invitation he said was extended to some youth leaders in the Niger Delta by the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, purporting that “it is not just provocative, but also targeted at demeaning other youth groups and sections of the region.
“We are saying that the selective approach in handling issues that concern the generality of Niger Deltans is not the best when it comes to sustaining people and progress in the region.
“We are saying that Sen. Akpabio should use his office to ensure that every aspect of the region is treated fairly with respect to avoid misunderstandings. We enjoin that him to retrace his steps to ensure that every aspect of Niger Delta is treated equally with decorum.

“We urge the general public to disregard such meeting as its resolutions would remain unacceptable by the people of the oil rich region.
“It will interest you to know that the planned Protest of the South South Youths Initiative still hold at the end this month November 2021
“Enough of the Deceit by Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio the South South Youth will ensure that the needful is done this time through our peaceful protest, which is geared towards correcting the wrongs in the regional.
“This is the worst minister of Niger Delta affairs ever since the Agency was established; we are also using this opportunity to call for the immediate sack of the minister of Niger Delta affairs Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio.”
