Youths of the oil rich Niger Delta region, under the aegis of South-South Youths Initiative, SSYI, has said it will again, take over the corporate head office of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in Port Harcourt if the Federal Government remains silent on constituting the substantive board for the Commission.
The Pan-Niger Delta youth group known as the umbrella body for youths of the region stated this in a letter by her national president, Imeabe Saviour Oscar and national secretary general, Nyakno Otu, to the honourable minister, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, dated October 22, 2021.
In the letter titled, “Notice of Resumption of Protest” the group urged Akpabio to task the president, Muhammadu Buhari to inaugurate a new board for the NDDC.
You will recall that about two months ago, SSYI had shut down activities at the commission on a one week protest against the continued delay in the inauguration of the board.
According to them, “South South Youths Initiative, SSYI, the umbrella body for youths of the oil rich region, seeking good governance and development of the region, wishes to use this medium to notify you, the Honourable Minister, that we would be resuming our protest at the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in Port Harcourt soon if the Federal Government remains silent on constituting the substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
“You will remember that the youth body had in August carried out a one week protest at the NDDC headquarters, Port Harcourt, over the failure of the federal government to constitute a Substantive Board for the Commission. But, in course of the protest, we decided to relax the process to allow the government act on our demand. However, it is regrettable that till date the government has not deemed it necessary to act. This we see as neglect on the dignity of the region.
“As a body ready to ensure that our region gets a fair deal, we are resolute to sustaining the action against the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, until our demands are met.
“We are not asking for much, we are only requesting that the right thing be done in the NDDC. We are not happy that the agency is still being run contrary to the Act establishing NDDC. This has caused a lot of setbacks to the region. An unconstitutional administration can never be right in the sight of law, that is the reason we are insisting that a substantive board be immediately constituted. This substantive board will benefit the youths of the region, who in the instance are relegated and abandoned.
“We are urging you, the Honourable Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, to task President Muhammadu Buhari to hear us out. We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, who promised that issues affecting the people of Niger Delta would top his priority to act now and constitute a board for the commission.
“We are giving one (1) month for the federal government to act and set up the board of NDDC. If this is not achieved within the period, youths of Niger Delta will resume and shot down the facility until our demands are met.”
