The need for the decongestion on Nigeria’s Correctional Centres has again been stressed
The Central Zone chairman of the Movement for the Survival of the Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), Comrade Tari Zidougha, has called for the swift administration of justice to reduce the number of individuals awaiting trial in correctional facilities.
Comrade Zidougha made the statement when the leadership of the zone paid a B visit to the Nigerian correctional centre, Okaka in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State as a fall out of the 2026 Isaac Boro Day celebration where they donated food stuffs, provisions, toiletries and cash gifts.
He emphasized that a significant number of those awaiting trials are victims of arbitrary police raids or unfortunate circumstances, urging government to intervene, and reminded the public that those accused remain innocent until proven guilty under the law.
The MOSIEND chairman explained that their decision to visit the correctional facility was to identify with their brothers, bringing them a message of hope and also promised to advocate for better rehabilitation facilities to ease their reintegration into society upon their eventual release.
Earlier, the Deputy Controller of Corrections of the centre, Joseph Ogwuatu, assured that they try their best to rehabilitate the inmates with vocational training such as shoemaking and fashion design and also disclosed that the facility has been accredited as a NECO examination centre, while calling for more support to expand their training capacity.
High point of the visit was the unveiling of handmade leather footwear made by inmates of the facility for the visiting leadership of MOSIEND central zone.
