Group Moves to Tackle Oil Spill in Rivers

Worried by the incessant oil spill in the Niger Delta region, a group in Rivers State, has held a one-day sensitization walk to enlighten members of the public on the socio-economic impacts of oil spill.

 

The awareness, according to Global PowerUP, Port Harcourt, was also carried out to campaign the need to shift money and political influence away from fossil fuel companies.

It also noted that the sensitization campaign for climate solution was aimed at ensuring a clean and equitable future for all.

 

The awareness which was held last weekend was in partnership with Zero Carbon Africa, GIF SEP, Lekeh Development Foundation, Global Citizen, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ, Rivers State chapter, Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, Voice of the Vulnerable, among several others.

With placards having inscriptions such as, “Let’s reclaim our future,” “now is the time,” “reclaim our energy system,” “keep oil in the ground,” among others, over hundred members and partners of Global PowerUP, including Mrs. Mercy Nwokocha and Mr. Peter Odey, from Young Africa Leaders Initiative, participated in the walk from Garrison to Trans-Amadi, in Port Harcourt, sensitizing people on climate change.

 

In an exclusive interview with TNN, the convener, Mr. Smith Nwokocha explained that the awareness was centered on climate change.

According to him, the awareness was organized in November because, “as fossil fuel companies publish another round of obscene billion-dollar profits, we will take to the streets to show that a world powered by clean and fair renewable energy is not only possible, it is ours to make”

 

Nwokocha added that, “on every continent, in big cities and on small islands, we will spotlight the oil industry’s greed and reclaim the money and power to fund a just future powered by the sun and the wind.”

During an interactive session with members of the public, Ibiso Ikiroma-Owiye, of Grassroots to Global Sustainable Development Network explained that, “the focus is on climate change, we are creating awareness and sensitizing people so actions can be taken to avert global warming body.

 

“Oil spill has done much harm not good to our health, river, fishes and has severely contaminated our drinking water. We want everyone to know the impact of oil spill and emphasis on the need for oil to stay in the ground.”
