Dr. Reason Ebubechukwu Onya, son of a former commissioner in Rivers State and lecturer in the department of political science from the state university, Dr Reason Onya ,has broken academic records at the IM Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Russia.
The phenomenal stride by the 22 year old son of Ubio community in the Ekpeye Kingdom, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, earned him a valediction at the institution’s graduation ceremony which was attended by his parents.
With a comprehensive and unbroken As and a flawless character, the young Onya was awarded a gold diploma and a gold medal for his table-shaking academic performance, making him the first Nigerian at home and abroad to graduate with such a result as a medical student.
With a sense of dignity and candour, he marched to the rostrum graciously to present his valedictory speech, looking at his parents and smiling at them, with the parents shedding tears of joy and feeling some air of pride and fulfilment.
His short speech evoked some emotions. He did not look down on his colleagues who did not attain anything near his academic feat. But he spoke on how the journey to excellence started and how the younger ones can also excel.
“I learned how to wake up early, attend my classes with full commitment, and always give my best. Thank you so much for all you have taught me. We faced numerous challenges. We came from different parts of the world, but today we are united in one goal—to serve as doctors and medical professionals, to provide care to those in need, and uplift communities globally.
“To my dear colleagues, let this not be the peak of our achievements, but a springboard for a lifetime of impact. To young boys and girls in Nigeria, Egypt, Russia, and across the globe, wherever you may be watching this, know that nothing is above you. You are the best.
“We came from different corners of the world, but today we are united—with one mission: to serve and uplift communities.”
“I believe in us. And I believe we are going to do great things—as long as we believe in them.”
As he spoke, he turned towards the direction of his parents, thanking them for not just paying his fees, but showing him the way to a life of distinction.
He told the father: “You are truly the wind beneath my wings. Your footsteps laid the path I now walk. I am grateful to continue your legacy.”
The elderly Onya, a former environmental rights activist, smiled and murmured said “Thank you my boy, thank you very much.”
From Moscow, he told TNN over the telephone on Monday that he was glad that his son did not only bring honour and glory to his family, but also made a bold statement to the world, that Nigerians are a people of discipline, high intellect and can stand tall in all facets of life anywhere in the world.
