A’Ibom Gov To Visit Abandoned Premier Ukanafun Sec School Monday
2 min readAkwa Ibom State governor, Pastor Umo Eno has hearkened to the voice of reason and will embark on a visit to the foremost secondary school in Ukanafun, the Western Annang Secondary Commercial School, WASCO, on Monday, to flag off reconstruction works in the school.
TNN learnt that some persons had initially chosen the biggest market in the local government, the Urua Akpan Assiek for reconstruction under the one project per local government initiative of the governor.
But TNN learnt that a member of the House of Representatives from the area, Unyime Idem had drawn the attention of the governor to the deplorable condition of the school. The governor was said to have accepted to shelve the idea of the market project and settled for the school. Idem is an alumnus of WASCO.
As A’Ibom Gov Visits Alma Mater, Alumni Beg Him To Also Visit WASCO
The alumni association has, in the recent past, clamoured for the reconstruction of all academic infrastructure in the school which have since become rotten. As at now, there is virtually no healthy building in the school.
The male and female hostels, the dining hall, the residences of the principal and vice respectively, the laboratory and other structures have all been swallowed by grasses, while the classroom blocks are no longer habitable.
Besides, the school no longer has toilet facilities, forcing teachers and students to make use of nearby bushes whenever nature calls.
The only storey building in the school now has some serious cracks, forcing the school authority to abandon the structure entirely, for fear that it may collapse on human beings.
Idem confirmed to TNN over the telephone on Saturday that the governor had graciously accepted to look at WASCO for the one project per local government programme of his government and expressed gratitude to him for the listening ear.
Idem who is the chairman of the committee on public procurements in the House of Representatives also told TNN that he has lofty plans for the school and that the place would soon wear a new look.
Only last year, the lawmaker undertook the construction of the road leading to WASCO, which also leads to the Akpan Assiek Market, apart from many other projects he has been able to attract to his federal constituency, including computer sets which he had earlier donated to the school and equally built ICT centres in some parts of the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency.
