CAN: Chianson Not Our Scribe

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has rejected Archbishop Chivir Chianson, dismissing his claim to be it’s General Secretary and maintaining that he lacks the power to represent the body.

The body also cut ties with a group accused of using it’s name to campaign for a political aspirant ahead of the 2027 polls, stressing that it does not take sides in politics.

CAN’S President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made this known in a statement released on Wednesday, cautioning that Chianson and the group linked to him have no formal connection or official link with the association.

Okoh stated that the association never approved, supported or gave permission to the cleric or his group to carry out any political mobilization on it’s behalf.

He noted that whatever political stance, support or action credited to them must not be seen as the position of the Christian body.

He emphasized, “For the avoidance of doubt, Archbishop Chivir Chianson is not the General Secretary of CAN and has no authority or mandate to speak or act on it’s behalf.”

Christian Association of Nigeria’s reaction follows Chianson’s public remarks on the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for re – election by the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, where Chianson is Secretary – General.

The association cautioned against what it called moves by unconnected individuals and groups to hijack it’s name and use it for political or personal benefit.

It said that as the apex body of Christians in the country, it owes a duty to defend the interest of Christians and promote national growth.

Restating it’s stand ahead of the 2027 elections, CAN said it will keep addressing national matters fairly and holding political office holders responsible, no matter their party, without supporting any party or aspirant.

The body called on Christians, the general public and media houses to ignore any claim by Chianson and his group to be speaking for Christian Association of Nigeria.

The Christian body added that it will take lawful measures to safeguard it’s name, image and institutional integrity from illegal use and false representation.
