Sources within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) say the visit of Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, presidential candidate of the party to former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi may not be unconnected with efforts by Atiku to reconcile aggrieved party stakeholders after the primary election.
The meeting, it was learnt, was to particularly secure Amaechi’s support ahead of the presidential election having lost the presidential ticket to Atiku and reportedly became disgruntled.
It was also gathered that the former Nigerian Vice President was considering Amaechi as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, on Thursday met with his major rival in the party’s presidential primary, Amaechi.
Atiku emerged winner of the recently concluded ADC presidential primary, defeating Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to clinch the party’s ticket.
Amaechi had, before the official declaration of the results, rejected the outcome of the exercise, alleging that the process was fraught with irregularities.
However, Atiku, in his acceptance speech after the primary, appealed to Amaechi and other aggrieved members of the party to close ranks and work together ahead of the 2027 general election.
