Rivers CP Moves Against Vehicles With Invalid Plate Numbers

Edith CHUKU

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered statewide clampdown on vehicles operating without valid registration number plates.

The CP warned that the operation which would commence March 16, will also target vehicles with covered or obscured number plates.

According to him, vehicles found using revolving or flash lights without an official letter of approval from the appropriate authority will be impounded.

In a statement on Thursday, by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Irinke-Koko, the CP explained that the enforcement exercise is aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening crime prevention efforts, and ensuring strict compliance with traffic regulations across the state.

Adepoju observed that vehicles without proper identification, as well as those illegally using revolving lights, pose serious security risks and are often linked to criminal activities.

He warned against the use of tinted glasses, on commercial vehicles, noting that such vehicles are frequently exploited by “one chance” kidnapping syndicates to perpetrate criminal acts.

The CP urged members of the public to be vigilant and cautious when boarding vehicles with heavily tinted windows, even as he advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and display clear and visible number plates at all times.

He warned that “unauthorized use of revolving or flash lights by private individuals is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

“Defaulters will have their vehicles impounded and may be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

The police commissioner assured residents that the enforcement exercise will be carried out professionally, fairly, and without bias. He called on residents of the state to cooperate with officers of the State Police command in the interest of public safety and security.

He further charged members of the public to, “ensure their vehicles have valid and clearly visible number plates. Remove any unauthorized revolving or flashing lights from their vehicles immediately. Avoid the use of tinted glasses, especially on commercial vehicles. Carry all relevant vehicle documents while driving. Be vigilant and cautious when boarding commercial vehicles with tinted windows. Report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.”

While reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order across the state, the CP made available emergency numbers for public use. “Control Room-0803 200 3514, Complaint Response Unit (CRU) 07057605256, 08120822987, 09035774814, PPRO 0901 427 3818.
