The University of Calabar, in Cross River State, has raised the alarm over the safety and financial security of its students in Port Harcourt, following the activities of fraudsters.
Management of the institution in a circular by the Registrar, Dr. Chukwuka I. Icha, expressed worry that scammers were defrauding unsuspecting students their money in Port Harcourt.
It described as illegal, a distance learning centre in Rivers State, and disowned all activities associated with the supposed centre.
The institution revealed that the scammers were fraudulently using the name and logo of the institution to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.
The management disclosed that “the illegal institution, operating under the name Bori Business School, is located at the NUJ Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where it reportedly advertises Diploma, B.Sc., B.A., PGD and Ph.D. programmes.
“Bori Business School is not affiliated with the University of Calabar and has never had any form of affiliation with the institution.
“The University discontinued the operation of satellite campuses in 2003 following a directive by the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC), which prohibited the operation of such centres.
“The university has no satellite campus, coordinator or agent authorized to admit students or operate academic programmes on its behalf anywhere outside its approved campuses.”
Further, the management advised members of the public to be vigilant and avoid falling victim to individuals or groups falsely parading themselves as representatives of the University of Calabar.
The institution completely dissociates itself from the activities of the illegal centre, and called on the Rivers State Ministry of Education to investigate the activities of Bori Business School and ensure its closure for unlawfully using the university’s identity and bringing its reputation into disrepute.
Management urged the public to be guided accordingly and to verify all information relating to admissions and academic programmes through the university’s official channels.
