UN, PDP Honour A’Ibom Rep Member For Outstanding Performance In NASS
3 min readFor his outstanding performance, the House of Representatives member from Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Unyime Idem, has earned double honour-from the state chapter of his party, the PDP, and the United Nations Peace Organisation.
Last week, chairman of the PDP in Akwa Ibom, Elder Aniekan Akpan spoke glowingly about Idem’s performance as the only party member from the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, saying the lawmaker had done extremely well and described him as a shining light.
Idem is said to have attracted various development projects to his federal constituency, including solar powered street lights and roads, apart from the empowerment of his constituents.
For example, he is said to have lit up the secondary school he attended-the Western Annang Secondary Commercial School in Ukanafun in line with the promise he made during the 50th anniversary of the establishment of WASCO.
At that anniversary, Idem had also promised to draw the government’s attention to the school for the construction of some classroom blocks as well as an administrative block in the school.
TNN learnt that contract for the two projects have already been awarded while contractors are expected to mobilise to site in a matter of days. These initiatives must have excited the PDP chair, who sang his praised and gave him thumbs up.
The chairman said: “Thank you so for not allowing the PDP to lose totally in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district during the last general elections. Of all the five National Assembly positions that were contested for in the last general elections in the senatorial district, you’re the only representative from the PDP that emerged winner and you’ve been a great ambassador of the party in the federal legislature. We’re proud of you. Please, rise up and take a bow.
“You’re a blessing to Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Akwa Ibom state. The party is so proud of your exceptional performance. You’ve ticked all the boxes of a lawmaker.”
The chairman added: “Your bills, motions and oversight functions are those of national interest and aimed at bringing dividends of democracy to our federal constituency and the state. You have attracted many projects to the federal constituency.
“Your empowerment programs and projects attracted, including the lighting up of 200 communities across the constituency, roads constructed, federal jobs you’ve facilitated for constituents and Akwa Ibomites, facilitating the inclusion of Akwa Ibomites abroad as ambassadors of the state, among others, are testament of a man who means well for the people, and that can only come from the PDP.”
Even with what he has been credited to have done, Idem says his constituents have not seen anything yet. “What you’ve seen so far is nothing compared to what will be coming in the future.”
The dust was yet to settle when the Country Representative of the United Nations Peace Organisation, Mr Mojima Etukudo presented an award to Idem for what he called the lawmaker’s outstanding performance.
Presenting the award to Idem who is also the chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement, Etukudo said lawmaker was selected after a thorough process, following his sterling performance, which towers above other parliamentarians whose names made the screening list.
He commended Idem for his achievements including sponsoring of people-oriented bills, motions, excellent oversight activities, empowerment of constituents through skills, business grants, facilitation of federal jobs, attraction of numerous projects, among others and urged the lawmaker to see his present office as a stepping stone to higher responsibilities in future.
An elated Idem, in response, said it was pleasing to know that his efforts were receiving international attention, but noted: “I still stand by my promise to my constituents that I will not get carried away by our achievements so far, but will keep pushing, to bring more dividends of democracy to the constituency and Akwa Ibom state.”
