That Attack On Lee Maeba’s Port Harcourt Home
3 min read
On Thursday last week, there were media reports on the attack by unknown men, on the residence of Senator Lee Maeba, a former ally of the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who fell out with the governor after he decided to join the campaign team of the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
According to reports, the suspected assailants scaled the fence of Maeba’s home, shot sporadically and made failed attempts to gain entrance in the house. While addressing journalists, Maeba was quoted to have said that the attackers were in his home to kill him, but that he had left the house to see his in-law, moments earlier.
Maeba’s phone calls to security operatives, among them, the state DSS director and the commissioner of police, were not answered, according to the PDP chieftain.
Before today, Maeba and a few other chieftains of the PDP in the state were hand in gloves with Wike. At that time, it was usually said that they would resume with Wike for breakfast in Government and would follow him anywhere all day, then retire to their homes after the day’s business. They also had some patronage from Wike.
After Thursday’s incident, accusing fingers have pointed in the direction of the governor, especially because of his stance against Atiku and whatever he represents. Some people have even said that if the proverbial witch cried in the night, only for a child to die in the morning, it would not be difficult to know where the death came from.

But Wike is only known to be brave and braggadocios; he is not known to have had any link with cultists or any killer squad. Which is why it is a bit doubtful if his accusers are right.
The good thing in all this, is that law enforcement agents have started investigations into the case. The police boss is reported to have given a marching order to his men to find those behind the attack on Maeba’s home with a view to bringing them to book.
This is where we also stand. Our belief is that security agents in the state have all it takes to find the attackers. Only a few days ago, Wike had donated crime fighting facility to the police, to help them track criminals in the state. From reports, based on what both Wike and the police high command said, no criminal would thenceforth be able to run away after a crime had been committed, because from the newly inaugurated facility, operatives can see what is going on in all parts of the state, especially the state capital.

So, the time has come to test the integrity of that police facility. The operatives must do all it can grab all those behind the dastardly act. Efforts must not only be made, but must also be seen to have been made to ensure that all politicians and members of the public in Rivers State are safe and secure, no matter the political view they hold.
As the 2023 elections draw closer, we expect the state government and all security agencies to work together to secure lives and property. We also expect the ruling party in the state to live true to their talk, by allowing the opposition to campaign freely in the state. Anything short of this will amount to intimidation and we cannot afford to experience this. Never again should we hear of attacks of this nature.
