The choice of Mr Joshua Maciver, a former Niger Delta freedom fighter as running mate to Chief Timipre Sylva for the November 11 gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State appears not to have gone down well with many chieftains of the party.
While some of the party leaders have chosen to adopt the siddon look approach, refusing to make public statements on the development, some supporters of the former governor have applauded his choice of Maciver.
Maciver, a former chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government, was among the contenders for the ticket of the APC for the election, but he lost to Sylva in a primary election that was rejected by Mr David Lyon, the 2019 governor-elect who won under the APC banner.
While some social media commentators hailed Sylva for choosing Maciver, others said the choice was an indirect endorsement of the PDP candidate, Senator Douye Diri, as winner.
Some former lawmakers who belong to the party who were approached by TNN to comment on the development only agreed to speak off the records. They said the choice was a bad omen for the party’s drive for victory.
One of them only said ‘no comments’ in response to a whatsapp message from TNN. Another one said Maciver’s choice would help the party to fail. He said the people of Southern Ijaw would not forgive Sylva for the treatment he meted to their son, Lyon.
Shortly after the primary election that produced Sylva, there had been speculations that Sylva would pick Maciver to contest with him as deputy. Last week, Sylva had said he was going to unveil his running mate soon.
