Pro-Wike lawmakers said it has set aside every 29th of October as a solemn day to commemorate the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The house led by Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule reached the resolution at its 68th legislative sitting, on Monday.
The attention of the 25 lawmakers was drawn to the incident which happened about 386 days ago, by the leader of the house, Mr. Major Jack.
Also, the Pro-Wike lawmakers accused the governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, of attacking the State House of Assembly.
They described the alleged unprovoked attacks by the governor on the said legislature as iniquitous, scandalous and malicious.
According to them, every October 29 would be used to commemorate the, “mindless, nihilistic burning down of the hallowed Chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly 386 days ago. The attack on the official residence of the Speaker, and the brazen demolition of the assembly complex.”
In his reaction, Amaewhule noted that, “it has been 386 days since the heartless burning down of the hallowed Chamber of the House, yet no conviction has been made.
“It has been 341 days since governor Siminialayi Fubara supervised the demolition of the Assembly Complex on the 13th of December, 2023, without the knowledge and approval of the House; it’s a sad reminder of the brutal attacks on the Legislature, which is the bastion of democracy.
“The House resolved to set aside every 29th of October as a solemn day to commemorate all the iniquitous, scandalous and malicious attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly by governor Fubara.”
The lawmakers also expressed worry over the deplorable state of alternative routes to the Port Harcourt ring-road and urged Julius Berger to commence immediate remedial repair on collapsed sections of alternative routes.
Expressing their readiness to follow up the request, the house further resolved to maintain synergy with the contracting firm, in the belief that the synergy would ensure the execution of the Port Harcourt ring-road and that the collapsed sections of the designated alternative routes are fixed.
