As part of her contribution to promote a clean environment and improve the overall health of citizens, the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, Rivers State, held a massive clean up exercise in the state.
The sanitation which was held in the 23 Local Government Areas of the state, was organized to mark the 2024 NYSC National Environmental Sanitation Exercise.
Following the theme: Clean Environment and Good Hygiene: Panacea for Good Health and Long Life, the Corps Members serving across the 23 LGAs of the state cleaned LG Council headquarters, major markets and motor parks.
Addressing Corpers during the official flag-off of the exercise at the Obio/Akpor LG Council headquarters, the state NYSC Coordinator, Mr. George Mfongang, described the sanitation exercise “as a way by which the NYSC Scheme gives back to the society.”
Mfongang who was represented by the Assistant Director, Community Development Service (CDS), Mr. Barnax Uloneme, explained that “the NYSC Scheme as a leading light of youth organizations in the world, as a matter of her ideal and noble roles in nation building is primed to shine her light for others to see and emulate the importance and imperativeness of a clean and healthy environment for all and sundry.
“The exercise will deepen the relevance of the Scheme in the hearts and minds of Nigerians.
“Corps Members and staff across the 23 LGAs of the State worked tirelessly in opening up blocked drainages, sweeping, cutting of grass as well as proper evacuation and disposal of generated waste materials.”
Observers who witnessed the exercise around Rumuokoro Market, Obio/Akpor, commended the NYSC Management and Corps Members for the initiative which they described as lofty and job well done.
One Mrs. Geraldine Amadi noted that “Rumuokoro market and the motor park has never looked so clean in recent times.
“I want to appeal to the NYSC top Management to sustain the exercise and make it more regular.”
In his part, Pastor Wilberforce Woke, called on the state government and other critical stakeholders to support the NYSC Scheme with the necessary logistics in ensuring overwhelming success in carrying out such national assignment.
