National Population Commission Launches 2023-24 NDHS in Rivers

As part of efforts to consistently raise the bar on demographic and health data collection in Nigeria, the National Population Commission, has launched the 2023/2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey NDHS, in Rivers State.

Briefing newsmen at the state office in Port Harcourt, the state director, Nwineh Barika Glory explained that the 2023-24 NDHS was not just a survey but an instrument of transformation and a compass guiding all towards a future where health disparities are reduced, gender equity promoted and where every Nigerian can thrive.

Nwineh who presented a keynote speech on behalf of the chairman of the commission, Nasir Isa Kwarra, stated that the objectives of the survey were clear and profound.

According to her, the 2023-24 NDHS objectives were “to gather high equality data on a wide range of vital indicators, including fertility rates, maternal and child health, contraceptive use, childhood mortality, gender-related issues, nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness and more.

“To provide data supporting evaluation needs of maternal and child health and family planning programs, enabling evidence-based planning and resources allocation.”

The survey aims also “to produce timely results and ensure wide data dissemination, informing program managers and policy makers. To strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for data collection, analysis and utilization, enhancing national ownership of the process.

She noted that the objectives were not mere words on paper, but were meant to show the path to a healthier and more prosperous Nigeria that can address the unique needs of its citizens, promote gender equality, improve health outcome and reduce the burden of disease.

The state director also expressed gratitude to their partners such as the Federal Ministry of Health, National Bureau of Statistics, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, United Nations Population Fund UNFPA, The Global Fund, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, WHO and other ministries, departments and agencies, stressing that they have played integral roles in aligning their efforts with other broader societal goals.

She added that the United States Agency for International Development USAID have provided both financial and technical support that has been instrumental in getting them to the point they are.

Nwineh further expressed confidence that with the continued support and dedication of all the partners “we will navigate the complexities of data collection and analysis and emerge with insights that will shape policies, drive progress and improve lives.”
