A member of the House of Representatives from the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency of Cross River State, Dr Alex Egbona has expressed the hope that tourism will get a boost in the constituency as a result of deliberate efforts by stakeholders in that direction.
He said this in a special goodwill message to the people of Ugep to mark this year’s Leboku Festival. He said he was always proud to be identified with the Ugep people on the festival. The main event holds on Tuesday.
This is what he said in the message he sent to the people: “From the bottom of my heart, I send you warm greetings from my family and indeed the good people of Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency of Cross River State, whose interest I represent in the National Assembly.
“I feel really proud to identify once again, with the Leboku Festival. This is one festival that promotes bonding and unity among our people. Although it is an annual event promoted by the Ugep people, Leboku festival has over the years stood out as a phenomenal programme in the tourism calendar of the world.

“Tourists from within and outside Nigeria have become used to the festival and that speaks volumes of the impact the event has made to the economy of Ugep and indeed Cross River State. I am particularly impressed because it makes my work less cumbersome, as I try to draw the attention of the federal government to the tourism potentials in our constituency.
“Only recently, I started engaging the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation on the possibility of their involvement in the development of the various tourism sites that dot our area. So far, I have extracted the commitment of this federal government agency in that direction and I know that once action starts, we will be happy for it.

“I have since become a partner with the Leboku festival and will work harder to ensure that the festival gets more endorsement by those that matter in our society. Remember, it was during one of celebrations of Leboku that I was honoured with the title of Obol Nkama 11 of Ugep. So, I am actually a part of this event as a critical stakeholder.
“It is therefore my honour to rejoice with the Obol Lopon of Ugep and the entire people of Yakurr Local Government on the successful hosting of this year’s event. I also welcome all visitors to our federal constituency and pray that they will have the best that this festival has to offer. Congratulations my people.”
