Chiemeka ADINDU, Calabar
Following the illegal packing of vehicles and other activities in the streets of Calabar which is gradually making the city loose its touch of being the greenest and cleanest in the country, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC has agreed to partner with the Greater Calabar Capital City Development Authority, GCCCDA to decongest the city.
The agreement was reached in Calabar recently when board members of the GCCCDA paid a courtesy visit to the Sector Commander of FRSC, Cyprian Ikechukwu Ofordi at the Command headquarters in Calabar.
In his remarks, the Sector Commander of FRSC was pleased with the development, stating that the visit has made things easier for them. He said the FRSC has been looking for organizations like Greater Calabar to partner with to ensure Calabar remains green and clean.
He said the visit has opened another door of interaction between the agenvy and the road safety as they cannot do what they are doing alone without such collaborations. “The press is our partner in progress so also your organisation. What you are doing is what we are doing also. We want to make the city beautiful where people can move freely in Calabar without accidents. And your coming today has reduced our burden because we’ve been thinking of how to call you”, the Sector Commander expressed.
He used the medium to call on the state government to come to their aid as their office is in urgent need of renovation and expansion. He lamented that the situation made the state lose the opportunity of having a zonal office to Port Harcourt for lack of space.
Earlier, Board Chairman of GCCCDA, Bassey Effiom said the visit was initiated to appreciate the FRSC for their efforts in reducing reckless driving in the state which has caused a great reduction in accident rate.
He said the agency was established by law number two of 2015 in Governor Ben Ayade led administration. He added that one of the core missions of the agency is to carter for the people of Southern Senatorial District which is comprised of Calabar Municipal, Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Odukpani, Bakassi, Akamkpa and Biase local government areas of the state.
Also speaking, Director General of the agency, Kingsley Ikpeme said their mandate is to decongest the city of Calabar. “We are also saddled with the responsibility of promoting sanitation and transportation within the geographic location. That is why we have come to have a symbiotic relationship with the road safety because we cannot work in isolation. We also work with other MDA’s in the state like the Surveyor General, Geographic Information Agency, the ministry of justice, the ministry of environment and local government chairmen of the geographic area”.
He urged the Sector Commander not to relent in the good work he been doing since he assumed office. He noted that press releases have been sent to the drivers on the indiscriminate packing of vehicles on the highways by truck drivers and the need to relocate to the pack provided for them along Lemna.
