The Technical Adviser to the Governor of Bayelsa state on Environment, Comrade Morris Alagoa
has expressed displeasure over what he described as serious violation of sanitation laws, calling for necessary steps to ensure that offenders are prosecuted in order to stem the ugly situation.
The environmentalist was responding to a distress call from residents of Ebis Road, off Winners’ Road, Etegwe in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State over persistent foul odor caused by sewage discharged from a recently constructed hotel and shopping mall in the area.
The victims of the pollution sought government’s urgent intervention through the technical adviser, expressing concern that the stench emitting from the sewage poses serious health risks to them.
The residents made the appeal on Tuesday, during an inspection visit to the area by the technical adviser on Environment, Alagoa.
One of the residents, Becky Duabofa Bukuromo, who decried the continuous pollution of the environment allegedly discharged by the newly built King George’s Hotel and Shopping Mall, noted that officials from the Ministry of Environment and the State Environmental Sanitation Authority had earlier visited the area and made promises, but no concrete action has been taken to stop the discharge.
Other residents, including Mr. Ebi Alhaji and Mrs. Tari Buruboyefe, also shared their experiences, highlighting the negative impact of the pollution on their daily lives, calling for urgent government intervention to restore a healthy living environment.
Our Correspondent reports that some of the residents are nursing plans to carry out a protest if Government continues to ignore their predicament
