Sounding humane and excited, Rivers State governor, Sim Fubara, on Sunday in Port Harcourt sent words of apologies to those he may have offended in the course of the battle for the conduct of the local government elections in the state, saying he needed to confront the monsters that were trying to take away the peace and dignity of the state.
Fubara must have attracted the ire of people like the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbotokun, who he described as a shameless man that could not draw the line of friendship between him and a serving minister.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the 23 local government elected on Saturday across the state-22 from the APP and one from the AA-Fubara said he acted the way he did because “desperate moments required desperate actions.” He said those who felt offended by his utterances and actions should forgive him.
At the event was the chairman of PDP governors forum, Bala Mohammed. Twice, Fubara looked at his direction and told him that he was still a member of the PDP, urging the party not to be afraid.
Specifically, he said “I know why the chairman of the PDP governors forum is here. He wants to be sure that I am still in the PDP. Don’t worry, I am still a member of the PDP.”
The governor urged the newly elected chairmen to ensure that they worked for the interest of their people because, according to him, “that is the structure. When you serve the people well, that is the structure,” an apparent reference to what the FCT Minister used to talk about, as reason for their quarrel.
Fubara said he would be on their toes and ensure that they worked well for the people as they could not afford to fail, considering the battle they had to fight to enthrone the people’s will. He said with the conclusion of the local government election, the battle to free the state had been fought and won by the people.
The governor said he was not in the mood to fight anybody, neither would he tell anyone to get into the streets to protest. But he said he would continue to fight to make sure that assets of the state were protected.
Fubara said he was grateful to the president, Bola Tinubu for giving him all the needed support while the battle lasted. To him, Tinubu was a democrat who was largely interested in the progress of the state. He took ample time to praise Tinubu.
According to him, if not for the support and cooperation of the president, those who were fighting him would have consumed him.
The governor also appreciated God, saying if God were not with him, it would have been difficult to fight and win. He also appreciated the people of Rivers State for standing by him while the battle lasted.
Though he did not give details, the governor however hinted that some people were being mobilized across the state to attack the chairmen and prevent them from swearing in their councilors on Monday, but advised the chairmen not to confront anybody.
