Operatives of Operation Puff Adder under the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested 38-year-old Iliasu Mohammed in connection with the 2022 shooting of Police Inspector Ekperi Edwin Osuo in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Osuo was reportedly shot in the stomach in August 21, 2022, and left for dead by unknown assailants along his street in Akenfa.
Police sources described the attack as an alleged armed robbery and attempted assassination.
The officer survived but sustained life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery.
Reports indicate that bullets remain lodged in his body more than three years after the incident.
The case gained renewed attention following claims that a key suspect linked to the attack was previously released under controversial circumstances after being handed over to the Nigeria Police Force by the military.
Sources revealed that a fresh petition to the State Commissioner of Police, Daniel Iyamah, prompted the matter to be assigned to the Special Tactical and Intelligence Unit, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court, marking the first significant prosecutorial action in the case since the shooting occurred.
