Along the hospital road in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, a landlord whose name was given as Mr Hope Ekong, has allegedly inflicted injuries on his tenant, Miss Racheal Ndop, for allegedly refusing his romantic advances.
As at Thursday, April 9, 2026, Ndop was still on admission at the hospital, following the severity of her injuries which the doctor was still attending to.
The suspect on his part was said to have been arraigned before a magistrate court in the state, on Wednesday following his arrest by the police.
When TNN called the victim’s phone number, a man who introduced himself as Mr Sunny Sandy, her brother, took the call, explaining that she was not yet very stable to talk.
Narrating the incident to our correspondent, Sandy expressed dismay over his sister’s assault, which he said was unprovoked.
He accused the landlord, who he described as a bouncer and son of a late military officer, of using sword on his sister which he said resulted to severe injuries.
According to him, “where she actually stay, the landlord has been asking her out, she refused and because of that the landlord kept malice with her, caused a lot of mayhem.
“I think that very day she was eating with a friend when the landlord came out and carried the Indomie and threw away on the road side. When the girl reacted, say why did you throw away my Indomie, he now went inside, because of the initial bitterness that he had, he had to go inside and brought his sword from the house and started beating the girl to that extent.
“The young man is a bouncer, his late father was an Army man so he has been using that influence, as a son of a military man and he is also a bouncer, with the expectation that nothing is going to happen because that is what he has been doing to other people and nobody has been saying something, he never knew that this one is going to be the end of the road for all of this mayhem he has been causing in the society.
“He used sword that he has been using for his official duty, this bouncer work that he is doing.”
On their family’s demand, Sandy noted that “all what we want the police to do is justice for the girl, all what we want is justice.
“Right now she is in the hospital. She is not actually well enough to talk that’s why I am holding her phone.”
He noted that the landlord had been arrested. “Definitely he has been arrested and he was to be arraigned before the magistrate court in Akwa Ibom State.”
On payment of Ndop medical bill, Sandy appreciated the Ukanafun Local Government Chairman, Prince Uyo Ukpanah, saying “that is been done by the chairman of one of the local government in Akwa Ibom State, Ukanafun in particular, he is the one that is in charge of the entire bill, by name Prince Uyo Ukpanah.
“She is responding to treatment but the wounds are so severe.”
Meanwhile, appeals have been made to the state chairperson of FIDA, Emem Ette, to look into the situation and ensure justice for the victim
