An environmentalist in Rivers State, Mr Stanley Realman, has described as unfortunate, the action of some residents seen collecting spilled fuel from a tanker.
In a viral video as reported by Punch, residents were seen with buckets, jerrycans and other containers, scooping fuel after a tanker spilt its content along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, close to the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road.
Realman who spoke with TNN in a telephone interview on Saturday, declared the act as careless, insisting that they have no value for their lives.
He rebuked the claim that hunger, starvation and hardship, might have propelled their action.
His words: “It’s so unfortunate that no matter how many times an incident happens, Nigerians will not learn.
“Worse is that, we see how this act of carelessness has made hundreds of people lose their lives, property, some lost parts of their body yet, we repeat same without thinking.
“Using hunger, hardship as excuse for such recklessness is unacceptable. Let’s value our lives.
“A tanker spilt fuel and human beings in their hundreds are rushing to gather fuel, endangering themselves, God forbid, what if it explodes? Yes, it could.
“Let’s be cautioned. Also, emergency team should be swift in their responds when situations like this arises.”
