The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 16 Police Command, Abubakar Zubairu, has charged the Commissioner of Police newly posted to Bayelsa State, Ajao Adewale to strictly adhere to the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on modern policing.
The AIG, who oversees Bayelsa and Rivers States commands gave the charge at the zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa during Adewale’s courtesy call on him following his assumption of duty as the 39th commissioner of police in Bayelsa State.
The AIG, alongside members of his management team, comprising Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mercy Okoro, deputy commissioner of police, Ijeoma Princewill, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ogah Reuben; assistant commissioner of police, John John; and ACP Chuks Nwoke, warmly received the commissioner.
The new CP was accompanied on the courtesy visit by deputy commissioner of dolice, Anche Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Musa Mohamed and other officers.
During the visit, the AIG reiterated the directives of the Inspector-General of Police on effective, professional, and people-oriented policing.
He emphasized the need for strict supervision of personnel and continuous monitoring of police operations to ensure that officers discharge their duties in accordance with established standards and the law.
The AIG particularly stressed the need for proper regulation and supervision of roadblocks, warning against unauthorized checkpoints and other practices that could inconvenience members of the public or undermine the image of the Force.
He further emphasized the IGP’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion, abuse of power, and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
He also cautioned against prolonged detention of suspects, directing that officers must ensure that cases are handled promptly and in accordance with due process.
Zubairu charged the commissioner of police to provide effective leadership, maintain discipline, supervise personnel diligently, and ensure that the Bayelsa State command remained committed to safeguarding lives and property.
In a statement by the zonal Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gunn Ewhobowho, the AIG urged the CP delivering quality and professional policing services to the people.
The courtesy visit further strengthened the existing relationship between the zonal and the Bayelsa State Commands with both leadership teams reaffirming their commitment to effective policing, accountability, professionalism, and public safety.
