The police in Rivers State has apprehended the male friend of late Ifeoma Uzo-Igwe, who fled about four days before neighbours discovered the decomposing body of his female lover at Woke Street, off Cherubim Road, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt.

The body of the deceased, popularly known as ‘Oyibo’ was found by her co-tenants last month, in her apartment, shortly after her supposed male lover who was living with her, allegedly disappeared with their 18 months old daughter.

The accused lover, whose name was given simply as Kelechi was arrested on Thursday, as confirmed by the caretaker chairman of the compound where the deceased and her fleeing lover lived until her death.

Caretaker chairman of the house, Mr. Chinonye Anurum in a telephone interview said he was called by Nkpolu Police Division, Mile 3 Diobu, on Thursday, and was taken to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, where he wrote another statement after the first statement he wrote in December when he first reported the incident to Nkpolu Police Division.

It is believed that the suspect was arrested by Nkpolu Police Division with the help of his immediate family who trailed him to his hideout almost one month after the incident.

According to Anurum, “I think he was arrested according to the UST police station, they called me on Thursday that his people has arrested him from where he run to, they bring him back to the police station. Meanwhile, the Centre For Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has commended the role played by members of the immediate family of the suspect which led to his arrest.

They said the manner at which the suspect fled before neighbours found his female lover’s dead body, creates room for suspicion, hence the call for discrete investigation to ascertain what caused the death of Ifeoma Uzo-Igwe.
