NGO Commends Wike, LG Boss On Fight Against ‘Kpofire’ In Rivers

The Bebe Owibo Youth Empowerment Foundation has commended the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, and the Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Michael John Williams, for courageously leading the fight against illegal bunkering activities in the local government and state, at large.

The foundation also applauded the roles being played by the Amayanabo of Ancient Bille Kingdom; King Igbikingeri Ngowari Cornelius Herbert (Agbaniye-Jike XVIII), and the councillor representing Bille kingdom, who is also the chairman of the task force formed by the Amayanabo of the kingdom, Elvis Osima Gogo on their respective roles in stamping out illegal refining of crude oil within the Bille Kingdom.

In a communique issued over the weekend by the president and founder of the foundation, Chief Abebe Jacob, the group lamented the huge environmental degradation, loss of aquatic life and means of livelihood, resulting from illegal bunkering activities.

Abebe stressed that majority of indigenes of the kingdom and adjourning communities, who rely on the fishing activities as a means of survival can no longer get good fishes, Ingbe, Ikoli, Asan, Oporo, and other sea foods, because of the harmful effect of Kpofire.

He decried the negative impact of the soot generated from these nefarious activities, adding that it should not be treated with kid gloves.

The foundation boss appealed to the government to set up testing centres for assessment of the state of health of members of the public.

Abebe also advised that, “the youths should be engaged in ways that can enhance productivity or else the reprisal effect of the stoppage of illegal crude refining would be another issue of human interest.”
