Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has been commended for ordering the demolition of an alleged drug zone at Melford Okilo Road, in Yenizue-Gene Community in Yenagoa.
The area popularly known as ‘Aboki Quarter’ was brought down due to its alleged notoriety in crime and other negative influences on unsuspecting youths of the locality.
Expressing satisfaction over the demolition, the acting Paramount Ruler of Yenizue-Gene, Chief Fanvie Maxwell and the CDC Chairman, Mr Melford Fabiri, spoke with journalists on the sideline of the demolition.
They noted that the community had on several occasions attempted evicting the occupants of the property who they claimed turned the place into a drug hub and centre of other nefarious activities, but to no avail.
Oon behalf of Yenizue-Gene community, the royal father and CDC thanked the Diri for doing the needful.
They also hailed the Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Mr. Bulodisiye Ndiwari, “for always recommending the demolition of the Aboki Quarters due to its notoriety in crime and negative influence on unsuspecting youths of the locality.
“We commend the security agencies for professionally supervising the execution of the exercise and appeal for proper surveillance of the displaced and fleeing drug barons.”
The demolished area was originally a community weekly market from the early Eighties with some block stores built in 1993, but upon the creation of Bayelsa state, the stores were rented to members of the public including some Northern fruit sellers and over the years, the place reportedly became a notorious zone for crime.
