Presidency 2027: Why Jonathan Won’t Declare Now

By Ofonime UMANAH

Indications have emerged, that former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, will not be in a hurry to declare the ambition to challenge the sitting president, Bola Tinubu, during the 2027 presidential election.

TNN learnt that those who are pushing for the former president’s return, are currently plotting what a major political gladiator calls high level political arithmetic, because “those that are now afraid of Jonathan’s entry into the race are not sleeping and are doing so much to stop him.”

It was learnt on Wednesday that much of the push is coming from retired military top brass, northern politicians, top leaders of the PDP and ADC. They are said to have increased the pace of mobilisation across the country.

A source close to one of those behind the push told TNN that the former president will not declare his intention anytime soon. “We are working with devils who do not want things to improve.

“It is good to keep them guessing. They will not know what is coming, but I am telling you that what is coming will be like a tsunami. Those who are waiting to hear from Jonathan on the matter will have to wait a little longer.

“But take this to the bank: Jonathan will contest in 2027 and the support base is swelling. I can tell you for free, that very top retired military officers are on this project. The high and the mighty from the north are involved.

“You are already aware that international allies have been pushing for Jonthan to return. So, it is becoming more interesting and reassuring with each passing day. Nigerians have suffered enough. Let Jonathan come and change the music,” the source said.

A few days ago, a former presidential aspirant under the Action Democratic Party, Mathias Tsado, urged Nigerians to mount more pressure on Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

“We need him back in 2027. This is not about politics but about saving Nigeria. He has the experience, the temperament, and the vision to bring our country back from the brink,” Tsado told his interviewers on a Channels Television interview programme.

To him, Jonathan left behind strong democratic values and reforms that could be revived to restore stability and noted that many Nigerians still regard the former president as a unifying figure.

“Those around him should speak to him with one voice. Nigeria needs him more than ever. His leadership style is what can calm tensions and redirect the economy,” he added.
