A twenty year old married woman, Believe (surname withheld) who hails from Akwa/Ibom, allegedly raped by one Mr. Ogechi Uchendu at Mgbuitanwo in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State has called for justice.
Narrating her ordeal, Mrs. Believe, in an interview said her husband’s friend, Mr. Uchendu, who is a native of the community came to their house on Tuesday, January 13, 2021, at night and requested she gives him knife which he claimed he wanted to use to cut down plantain.
She added that before asking for the knife, he first enquired from her the whereabouts of her husband and brother, unfortunately, they were not home.
According to Mrs. Believe, the suspect called her attention minutes later and asked her to open the door and take plantain she will give to her husband when he comes back.
She said she opened the door and took the plantain and the kitchen, adding that while she was coming back the husband’s friend held her and told her to comply or he will kill her.
The twenty year old Believe said despite her plea the man dragged her and allegedly raped her on bare floor at the corridor.
Meanwhile, The Youth President of the community, Mr. Chinedu Jeremiah affirmed that the suspect was arrested by the youth two days after they got the complain and was immediately handed over to the Rumuji Divisional Police headquarters in Emohua LGA.
The Youth President described the alleged rape of the woman on the floor as not only a crime but a sacrilege in the community, noting that it is a taboo for a man to have sex with a woman on bare floor in Mgbuitanwo whether they are couple or not.
He said the suspect was handed over to the Police because the Youth under his leadership do not condole criminality irrespective of ethnicity.
Meanwhile a human rights advocate, Prince Wiro who is also the Secretary of Board of Trustee Centre For Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the level of culpability of the suspect for possible prosecution.
As at the time of filing this report, Ogechi Uchendu 43 years of age is being detained at Rumuji Divisional Police headquarters.
