As the federal government continues to play politics with the construction of the Calabar-Itu Highway, the road has also continued to drink some more blood of citizens, the latest being the tragic accident that has claimed no fewer than 16 lives.
The accident which occurred on Friday was said to have happened when a trailer conveying a 40-feet container veered off its lane in a bid to dodge one of the many gullies on the road.
The trailer was said to have fallen on top of a commercial bus, burying it thereon. As at the time of filing this report, about 16 innocent lives had been recovered from the spot.
It was not clear if more bodies were left, but there were frantic steps to take off the rubbles and clear the road to enhance free flow of traffic.
For decades, successive governments have used the road as a campaign subject. Each time political campaigns begin, the gladiators would return to the site and begin to sing about how they would make the road motorable, just to get votes.
Most people now prefer to use the waterways to travel between Uyo and Calabar, as the roads have become useless.
