To encourage their participation in politics, women in Rivers State have been charged to stop selling their votes to male politicians for N1,000 and three cups of rice. Instead of selling their votes, she wants the women to participate fully in politics.
President of a women group, the Patriotic Ladies Initiative, PLI, Joyce Baryda Aladesae- Femi gave this charge last weekend at Equinox Hotel in Port Harcourt, during a programme captioned ‘Women and Politics.’

Speaking during the sensitization programme, Aladesae-Femi bemoaned the attitude of some women towards politics. She said not participating in politics and accepting N1,000 and some cups of rice was a way of mortgaging their future.
“We will not be carried away by some politicians distributing one thousand naira and three cups of rice for women to vote for them in-order to mortgage the future of our state.
“We say no to this corrupt practices and have therefore decided to work with our God given resources, though limited, to actualize our dreams.”

The PLI president who described the call for women participation in politics as timely, stressed that the aim is to ensure that in the forthcoming 2023 general elections in Rivers State and Nigeria at large, women cast their votes based on conviction.
Aladesae-Femi encouraged women to support each other, financially, morally and otherwise, in the forthcoming elections. She made known her intention to vie for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in 2023, but for financial constraints.
According to her, “Patriotic Ladies Initiative is a non-governmental organization out to empower women and indigent children, thereby assisting our men too. Our vision is to be the primary support platform for women to be informed, empowered to fully participate in decision making policies and programmes that will lead to a better society.
“We’ve examined some factors prohibiting women from participating in politics, and our core interest is to offer solution to that effect. We want to reach women in dire need of support; we shall be empowering girls, single mothers and mothers in the society such that they will be able to empower others. We shall not only give fishes but also teach how to catch fishes too, knowing fully well that if one woman can make it, we can also make it. I encourage women to come out en-mass to participate in the coming 2023 election.”
