Immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel may not recover from the shock of Godswill Akpabio’s emergence as senate president for a long time to come.
The former governor who has not been in talking terms with Akpabio for a long time now, has also not found courage to congratulate him, more than 24 hours after his former boss and godfather emerged third citizen of the country.
Akpabio and Udom started having issues shortly after Udom became governor. But Akpabio it was, that brought Udom to Akwa Ibom and made him SSG.
From there, Akpabio practically imposed Udom who was barely known by home based political class, on the state and worked hard to ensure that he became the governor.
The tea party between the godson and godfather was to end suddenly. It took “only God” for Udom to return for a second term, after Akpabio had left the PDP to join the APC.
In 2019, Akpabio could not secure a second term mandate to the senate,as Udom fought him to a stand still.
In 2023, Udom also fought hard, through Emmanuel Enoidem as candidate of the PDP, but couldn’t stop Akpabio from winning the senate seat for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.
However, Eno Idem who had served as commissioner under Akpabio, was quick to congratulate the former governor on Tuesday, immediately after the announcement was made.
Even, Pastor Umo Eno,the Akwa Ibom governor that was sponsored by Udom during the 2023 elections, had to lead a delegation to Akpabio’s house in Abuja to celebrate his emergence as senate president.
Eno, his wife and other fans were with Akpabio for a long time, after hand-delivering his letter of congratulations to the senate president.
It is not clear if he consulted Udom before taking the decisive step to celebrate a man that appears to be hated by his godfather.
But as at Wednesday, Udom had not sent any message of congratulations to Akpabio.
This may have confirmed speculations that Udom had fought to stop Akpabio from becoming senate president.
It was difficult to reach Udom to speak on this. His phone was not connecting when TNN tried to reach him.
